A gentle breeze ruffled Robert’s curls as he and Charles stood together looking down across the verdant sweep of the lawn, only just visible beneath the lightening sky.
For a while, neither man spoke then Charles turned and smiled at Robert. “May I say, sir, that you are a very pleasant addition to my aunt’s usually rather boring soirees?”
“Thank you.” Robert felt his cheeks glow at the compliment. “And may I say that I did not expect to meet a dashing cavalry officer this evening?”
Charles chuckled. “Emily been keeping me a secret, has she?”
“She mentioned in passing that she had a brother…”
“Only in passing?” Charles affected mock displeasure. “I shall have to have words with my dear sister.”
“She did say I would like you. And in that,” Robert added shyly, “she is correct.”
“Then I have forgiven her already.” Charles met Robert’s eyes, and Robert had to fight the urge that threatened to overwhelm him. The urge to forget all propriety and fling his arms about Charles, hold him pressed to his own eager body and taste the sweetness of his full lips. He trembled from the need building inside him. His cock throbbed and pushed against the front of his trousers, and he flushed with embarrassment at the sight he must now present.
“Shall we stroll a little?” Charles suggested.
Robert could not find his voice to reply but simply nodded once, so sharply he almost did his neck an injury.
They walked down the steps that led to the garden path and were soon swallowed by the darkness, the moon having scudded behind some clouds that loomed overhead. They paused to look back at the brightly lit house, from which emanated the sound of voices and laughter. Robert jumped slightly as he felt Charles slip an arm around his waist, then he leaned against the strong body and let himself be steered towards a large oak tree.
“No one can see us here,” Charles said, his voice low and strangely husky. He pulled Robert into his arms and held him, his lips a mere inch from Robert’s, his breath sweet and warm on Robert’s skin.
“Dear God,” Robert heard himself whisper as Charles kissed him. His lips were taken by a moist warmth that caused his head to thrum. For a moment, he thought he might swoon then he was kissing Charles back, his lips parting to let the other man’s tongue slip inside his mouth. Charles moaned, and his erection ground against Robert’s. Both men shuddered as their desire swept through them. Their arms tightened about one another, their kiss deepened, tongues meshing, tussling, caressing…
All too soon, Charles broke away, slightly out of breath. “Not here, Robert. Not here amongst this mud and wet grass.”
Robert thought he might fall over without Charles to support him. He reached out and gripped Charles by the shoulders.
“You…you’re right,” he stammered. “It wouldna’ do for our first time. I have rooms in Mayfair, if you would do me the honour of accompanying me there.”
“I am the one who would be honoured, Robert.”
“How can we make our excuses?”
“I’m staying at the officer’s club in Marylebone while I’m in town. I will tell my aunt that I’m taking you there to introduce you around to the chaps, that kind of thing.”
“Excellent. Let’s away then.”
Charles chuckled. “Patience, Robert. Though I am flattered at your eagerness, we must not just rush away. We’ll go in and chat for little while then—”
“Every second we tarry will seem like an hour.”
“And every hour we spend together will seem like a second,” Charles murmured, kissing Robert’s lips gently. “Come now, let us go in.”
Just before they entered, Charles turned to study Robert in the light thrown onto the terrace from the salon. Gently, he brushed down the lapels of Robert’s coat and straightened his collar.
“There,” he said his voice once again strangely husky. “You are quite presentable, sir.”

Sunday Snog

This is from my new Valentine's Day shortie - Laying Down For the Law - due out Feb from MLR Press - more details later:

After Steve and his cop buddy Rich go out on their first date, Rich gently refuses an invitation to go back to Steve's apartment...

My cell rang as I walked into my apartment. Rich? I glanced at the caller ID. No, Betty.
“Hi, Betty.”
“Steve, hope you don’t mind me calling this late, but I had to tell you, you won’t be dateless at the party. I went ahead and asked Angela to bring her brother, Kent, and he said yes, so you have a date. Isn’t that great?’
“Betty, I already have a date,” I said with some impatience. What was she, my personal yenta?
“But you said you didn’t!” she moaned.
“And now I do. His name is Rich, you’ll like him.”
“Oh, what am I going to do about Kent? He’ll be the one who’s dateless now.”
“Maybe you could ask around again, you know like you did for me. Sorry…” I was distracted by the sound of a knock on my door. “Gotta go, Betty, someone’s at the door, Bye.”
She was still protesting when I hung up. I wondered who it could be at this time of night. Most of my friends called before they came over and rarely this late. I swung the door open and nearly yelped with surprise.
“Rich. Is something wrong?”
“Yeah. Can I come in?”
“Of course. What is it? What’s wrong?”
“I’m a damned fool, that’s what’s wrong,” he said, pulling me into his arms. “I told myself before we met tonight that no matter what I was not going to make love to you on our first date, but I’d no sooner got on my bike than I cursed myself for all kinds of an idiot for turning you down when you asked if I’d come home with you. Of course I wanted to, more than I’ve ever wanted anything—so, here I am. I hope you don’t mind.”
“Mind? Are you crazy? But I thought you said you had a—” His lips on mine shut me up and we lost ourselves in a long, long kiss that would give all those in the Guinness Book of Records a run for their money. His hands were inside my shirt, stroking my back, pushing past the waistband of my chinos, cupping my butt, his fingers slipping into the crack, teasing my hole. Wow! When he wanted something he went all out.
Our clothes were scattered round our feet in a matter of seconds, his magnificent naked body was pressed to mine, and I could scarcely believe this was really happening. It was all so amazing—he was amazing—every inch of his muscled flesh a sculptor’s dream. He wrapped his arms around me and his lips took mine again in another long bruising kiss that had us both moaning and gasping into each other’s mouths. He lifted me off the ground like I weighed nothing and I wound my legs round his waist. Without breaking our kiss he headed for the bedroom door, pushing it open with his foot then depositing me on top of the bed. He lay over me, stretching his body so that every part of our nakedness was pressed together.
I was beginning to imagine I had died and been transported to Heaven. I could even hear some heavenly string section close by, then realized it was coming from the beside radio I’d been leaving on ever since the burglary attempt. That’s right—frighten off all would-be thieves with some light classical music. It seemed to fit the mood though as Rich’s lips covered mine and his tongue slid inside bringing with it an electrical jolt just as the music reached a crescendo.
Then Rich’s mouth was everywhere at once, scorching my lips, my jaw, my throat, my nipples. God! My body arched against his. I felt a rush of adrenaline flood through me. I was desperate to have Rich’s cock, to hold it in my mouth. I rolled him onto his back, no mean feat in itself, but he didn’t resist which made it easier, and I scooted down to encircle his long, thick, awesome dick with my fingers, to lick the swollen head and savor the salty cream that glistened at the slit.

Who is Megan Slayer - Cock and Bull Blog Tour

My guest today is Megan Slayer:

When she's not writing the stories in her head, Megan Slayer can be found luxuriating in her hot tub with her two vampire Cabana boys, Luke and Jeremy. She has the tendency to run a tad too far with her muse, so she has to hide in the head of her alter ego, but the boys don't seem to mind.

When she's not obsessing over her whip collection, she can be found picking up her kidlet from school.

She enjoys writing in all genres, but writing about men in love, suits her fancy best.

So, off you go Megan!

I’d like to thank JP for having me here today. It’s always fun to talk about books and such. But I’m supposed to start with a little bit about myself. I never thought I was that exciting, but here goes.

Who is Megan Slayer? Megan Slayer’s bio says she’s a whip-wielding writer by night and a mom by day. That’s half true. There’s a little more to Megan. I’ve got an unhealthy addiction to Queen music, the Tudors, and dirt racing. Gotta have my dirt car races. I’ve dyed my hair almost every color, but the natural ones. I have body parts pierced and not all of them are in my ears. I started writing six years ago and really got serious about it three years ago. I spend way too much time at my laptop and more than enough time on itunes when I’m not taking care of my totlet and three vampire cabana boys.
Now that you know a little bit about me, I thought I’d share a little bit about my latest work. My newest novella is titled Permanent. I got the idea for the story born out of a short story I’d written for my blog. Basically the characters, River and Tory told me they wanted their story told. At the time, it was just a sex scene. Once I let them talk more, I realized just what River had been through. It wasn’t just a simple sex scene. Tory is pretty much a –what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy. The thing they had in common was their affection and friendship. But for their story to make sense, Tory has to learn the dirty, ugly past River carries around. Writing Permanent was both emotional for me, and sometimes really hard. Emotional because I had to go down the same roads River traveled and hard because River is a complex guy.
Speaking of complex, like writing River, writing itself is complex and rewarding. I love writing...in some ways it’s an easy question and in some ways it’s really hard. Easy because I have so many characters all talking at one time, I have to write their stories. Hard because while I love listening to them, there are times when I can’t sit down to write. I love when the characters throw a total curveball at me...just not when I’m in the middle of my totlet’s school program. But really, even then, if I scribble the idea down on a paper or napkin and make sure to get it into paper later it’s all good. I love learning about the different characters and finding out just what made them who they are.
But for every fun and exciting part of writing, there are a few things that aren’t so hot. I’ve said it before, I love writing. What I’m not so keen on? Reviews. I love hearing what readers say about my work. Its the best to get fan mail. I even like getting reviews that aren’t so hot. I use them as learning tools. But what’s hard is the reviews that simply say something like ‘this is garbage’. Maybe it shouldn’t, but those hurt. Another thing that’s hard is editing. Getting the story out is fun. Going over it to make sure it’s the best it can be, that’s great. The edits, nitpicking through the manuscript is what can be tedious. Making sure there aren’t any typos or missing words. I know it’s necessary, but sometimes, it’s evil. Thank goodness I’ve got great editors.
You might be wondering, now that you’ve read my gripes about writing, what I’m working on now. Funny you should ask. I’m working on the fourth of my Glow band books for Changeling Press. The series follows the members of the punk band, Glow. The final book has no elementals in it. The other members of the band are either elementals or involved with an elemental. Writing Hiram and Slash’s story is going well. They both love to talk and are eager to get their story going.
I’ve also started a story about a vampire who doesn’t want to be one any longer. The shine has dulled on being a creature of the night. The one small issue is when one becomes a vampire, one cannot go back. So far, Julian isn’t buying that logic.
Now writing vampires and punk rockers doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Nope. I love to read and be inspired by other authors. I love to see what others are doing and how I can turn that on it’s ear. Inspiration comes from everywhere, but the authors who have inspired me? I love Kresley Cole’s vampire and supers. Those guys rock. Another who has inspired me is KA Mitchell. She manages to take characters that are more or less very ordinary and make them memorable. It’s like reading about friends. I’d like to say I want to grow up and write like Mitchell. Really, I’d like to come into my own and have readers like what I’ve written on it’s own merits. I love to read just about anyone in the MM genre and within the erotic romance genre. Like my characters, I like the heat along with the story.
Keep in mind, the writing and the reading doesn’t happen all the time. As much as I’d like to spend my waking hours either holed up with a good book, or at my laptop writing a book, I have other time-fillers. I have an EDJ as well as a totlet, so there’s not much time for free time. Grin. But when I have a spare moment, I like to draw. I’ve always been good at art and I like it. I don’t personally race cars, but I love to watch the races on television and in person. There’s something exciting about watching cars, and especially trucks, zip around a race track. The edge of danger and control is really cool. Maybe I’ve got a daredevil streak after all.
Speaking of daredevils, seeing those drivers in action makes my heart race. If I had my druthers, I’d spend my vacation time at the race tracks. I got to go down to Charlotte to the dirt track over my birthday. Yes, its dirty. Yes, its VERY noisy. But holy cow, the combination of fast cars, sexy drivers and those suits...gets me every time. Happy shivers.

Do you want to know more about my latest work, Permanent? Here’s the blurb and a saucy excerpt!

Sometimes love just ain’t enough...

River Cortland trusted the person he loved. His faith couldn’t protect him from the bitter sting of a cold-hearted Domme. If he’s going to learn to trust again, he’s got to deal with his past. His roommate and best friend, Tory, has seen the physical damage and hasn’t walked away. Can he deal with the emotional scars as well?

Tory McClellan wanted the carefree life...until one night with River changed everything. There’s more to the shy art teacher and Tory wants to know everything-how he tastes, the scent of his skin, the feel of his body as they make love. What terror lies behind River’s brown eyes? Better yet, how can Tory make the sadness go away and be in River’s life, permanently?

Here’s a white hot excerpt, because I can.

“You suck at subtlety. I know you look when you think I don’t see and I remember the way your body reacted when I held you. I liked it.” He closed the gap between them until only a breath kept them apart. “I’m not innocent and I have done some experimenting.” He inched closer, his arm and knee bumping River’s. “But I’ve waited too long for you to make a move.”
Not innocent? Experimenting? Make a move? If River didn’t know him better, he’d think Tory was attracted to him. The guys who tried to pick River up weren’t nearly as handsome as Tory. Most of the women hardly held a candle to Tory’s natural charisma.
“River?”
River opened his mouth to reply, to tell Tory he had no idea what he wanted him to say. This will change our friendship? Duh. Being with me will seriously screw up your reputation at the station? Without a doubt. I’m head over heels in lust with you? Oh hell.
Instead of answering, River fused his lips to Tory’s. The guttural moan erupting from Tory’s throat spurred River on. He fisted the sleeve of Tory’s T-shirt in his hand. Holy fuck.
The more River tasted Tory, the more he wanted from him. River cupped Tory’s jaw, the rough stubble prickling his palm.
Tory broke the kiss long enough to click off the television. His eyelids drooped. “Take off my shirt.”
Holy shit.
River didn’t think. He acted. He’d guessed right about Tory—the guy really did have a deep-down need to dominate. Now was the time to take his chance and live out his fantasy with Tory. River yanked the hem of Tory’s shirt up over his head and tossed the discarded clothing into the hallway. His nipples beaded. Cold air? Or arousal? River wasn’t sure.
“Taste me.”
Yes, sir. River feathered kisses over Tory’s jaw, rubbing his hands against Tory’s chest. He couldn’t get close enough to him. With a gentle, but firm nudge, Tory directed River to his pecs. River loved the firm texture of male nipples. Women’s were soft and forgiving. Men’s were more sensitive and needed care. Tory’s fingers twined into River’s hair, tugging the strands. River wasn’t into hardcore kink, but he needed the pleasure-pain. Finding his sister Nan in some distress over her pregnancy, Christopher makes a wish that all will be well with her and the baby, and another that William, traveling by train to his family in Scotland will be safe from the blizzard raging over the countryside.

As Christmas Eve approaches, William's train is stranded in snow drifts and Nan's baby is about to arrive prematurely. Cut off by the weather from a doctor's help, the family is in despair, and Christopher feels that his wishes may not be enough. Perhaps what they now need is nothing short of a miracle.

Victoria's Sunday Snog

An excerpt from my Christmas story - A Special Christmas:

“You leaving?” Daniel stared at them.
“I’m drunk,” Brett said, “and this nice man is gonna walk me home.”
“Make sure you stay nice, mister,” Daniel said through a grin. “I don’t want to have to deal with complaints in the morning.”
“There won’t be any complaints,” Devyn assured him.
“Defnitlee no complaints,” Brett said, swaying towards Daniel.
“Let’s go, Tiger.” The brothers rolled their eyes at one another then Devyn led Brett through the door and out into the cold night air. “You have the key handy?”
“Back pocket,” Brett mumbled.
“’Kay, not getting fresh here…” Devyn slipped his hand inside Brett’s back pocket, his fingers caressing Brett’s butt as he fished for the keys.
“Feels like you’re gettin’ fresh,” Brett said. “Kinda nice, though.”
“Oh boy. Why’d you have to get so drunk?” Devyn chuckled then looked up at the starlit night. “Look how beautiful all that is up there.”
Brett craned his neck to look up, almost falling on his ass in the process.
Devyn slipped an arm around him. “Come on, we’ll stargaze another night maybe.” He helped Brett up the steps to the cabin door and unlocked it. “Will you be all right?” he asked quietly.
“You’re not coming in?”
Devyn hesitated then nodded. “Just for few minutes, make sure you won’t fall and bump your head or anything bad like that.”
“My hero…”
“Get in,” Devyn growled, pushing Brett ahead of him. He switched on only one of the lights, figuring Brett probably didn’t need blinding at this moment. “You like some coffee, maybe?”
“I’d like a kiss,” Brett blurted. “I think I’m in desperate need of a kiss.”
“What?” Devyn’s smile faded as he stared at the handsome man swaying in front of him.
“Please. Please, just kiss me.”
Devyn stepped forward and cupped Brett’s face between his hands. Their eyes locked as he slowly drew Brett’s face near. Their mouths met, a soft brushing of flesh on flesh cooled by the night air, quick to warm as their lips pressed more firmly together. Devyn closed his eyes and wrapped his arms tightly around Brett’s torso.
Brett’s lips parted slightly, just enough to invite Devyn in, and he slid the tip of his tongue over Brett’s lower lip then pushed gently into the moist warmth of his mouth. A long shuddering sigh escaped Brett, his arms wound around Devyn’s neck, holding him while their tongues danced and tussled and the intensity of their kiss mounted.
Devyn was rock hard inside his jeans and knew he wasn’t mistaken about the erection Brett pressed into his thigh. He moaned, tightening their embrace, deepening the kiss, grinding his crotch into Brett’s. Another shudder coursed through Brett’s body then Devyn heard the unmistakable sound of a sob.
His eyes widened when he leant back and saw the tears running down Brett’s cheeks. “I don’t think I’ve ever had that effect on anyone before,” he murmured.
“I’m sorry…” Brett stepped away from him. “So sorry, Devyn. I shouldn’t have asked you to do that.”
“That’s okay, I didn’t mind. It was very nice really. But why don’t you tell me what’s wrong?”
“Oh god, no. No one wants to hear that stale story again.”
“I haven’t heard it, so how could it be stale to me? Here, I’ll make us some coffee, put on the fire, and we can talk. Okay?”

Link to story: http://www.total-e-bound.com/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=&P_ID=1017

GayRomLit New Orleans 2011

I will take away many memories of the first GayRomLit retreat - a gathering of authors and readers who love the male romance genre. First of all let's just say it was a smashing success - far beyond the expectations of the organizers, Carol Lynne, Ethan Day, Lynn Lorenz and your truly. Held in the historic and beautifully refurbished Bourbon Orleans Hotel in the fabulous French Quarter we enjoyed the sights and sounds of New Orleans right on our doorstep every time we stepped outside for a break from all the great things going on - the first night meet and greet in the ballroom, author signings, readings, wine and cheese party, Hurricane party, group meetings round the pool etc, etc.

Not to mention the Riverboat cruise where authors and readers met and mingled...and the pub crawls where there were some hot men ready to entertain us with eye candy to make even the strongest knees weak! Gosh... it all now seems like some kind of great dream where everything just went so well. We were thrilled that so many people, authors, readers and publishers could come together to make this dream a reality.

Our thanks must go to the publishers who supported this venture not only financially but with their much appreciated presence - MLR Press, Total-e-bound, Resplendence Publishing,Loose ID,Amber Allure,Torquere and Dreamspinner Press. Their generosity was part of what made GayRomLit such a great success, and they all enthusiastically announced they'd be there at the next one!

So hope to see you all again - and many more new faces too - when we meet again at the Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Oct. 18th, 2012!

Slaves to Love - Two - Damian and Demetrios

When Damian, a young artist, is commissioned to sculpt the image of Demetrios, Rome's current darling of the arena, he finds himself falling in love with the handsome gladiator. This article isn’t advice to fledgling writers by any means—just maybe some helpful hints I have accrued over the years.
I started writing in this genre about five years ago. Until then I’d been writing gay romantic fiction without the erotic edge. Yes, my men kissed, caressed and fell in love, but the love making was, in a word, discreet. When I wrote My Vampire and I, I opened the bedroom door and let the guys go for the gold, and after reading the words of one reviewer – “What a delightful surprise from J.P. Bowie” I figured I’d found my niche.
Elisa Rolle, our favorite Italian reviewer, also pointed out that although the story was about creatures of the night, there was a lot of humor in it, and very little angst, something I strive for in all my stories. Even in my darker tales, I have to inject some humor. Readers have to first love, or at least really like, the characters. They must want to cheer for them as the heroes’ mutual attraction grows and their lips meet for that first kiss. The readers must feel fundamentally involved in the men’s lives and want them to succeed. If that doesn’t happen then the writer has failed in some way to convey the hopes and fears of the protagonists, and to make the reader care for them.
Writing m/m erotic romance isn’t just a case of stringing sex scenes together. Quite often, too much sex in a story can get a bit boring after a while. Here’s where the character building comes in. The men should be real flesh and blood characters, not just buffed and gorgeous with big dicks. On the other hand, all that combined with intelligence, compassion, a sense of worth—and please, a sense of humor—will earn you points from most readers!
Then there’s the plot. Even in a short story there should be more than just boy meets boy, boy beds boy, and they live happily ever after. Yes, HEA’s are pretty much called for by most m/m publishers, but getting there should involve some conversation, perhaps some conflict (rather than angst), indecision, maybe even betrayal, something to hold the readers’ interest other than the fact the lads are buffed and gorgeous with big you-know-whats. I like mystery and adventure stories so a lot of my books contain those elements; even my paranormal stories tend to lean toward a mystery to be solved or action sequences. Anything to get the readers’ attention, and not have them skipping pages.
If you’re a new author, or yet to be published, gird your loins for those first reviews. Every author has had a rotten egg thrown at him or her at one time or another. Once your work is out there it’s fair game for everyone who thinks he/she can do better. Some are good and constructive critiques, others are simply destructive. But hey, it goes with the territory, and I, who have had my fair share of rotten eggs, try to learn from even the worst review.
Writing m/m erotic romance is above all else, fun. You get to invent these great characters, have them fall in love, have mind-blowing sex, chase villains on horseback or in cars or planes, have mind-blowing sex, face down bigotry, put the world to rights, have mind-blowing…Well, you get the idea. All you wannabe m/m writers out there – go for it, and have fun!

Single Release from Saddle Up and Ride!

When Sheriff Joel Harper, ex-wrangler, is falsely accused of assault and battery by a rich rancher’s son, he turns to Royce Chandler and Charles Fletcher for legal advice. It's up to Jeff and a sympathetic NYPD detective, Nick Fallon, to try to clear Andrew's name. Even with everything going on, it didn’t feel like it was over-packed with plot: the continued effects of Emily’s molestation on her and those around her; the reveal of Anthony’s childhood; the reappearance of Jeff’s ex, Joey; the murder of both Joey and Emily’s father; and the child prostitution ring. While we know who kills Joey (we are there when it happens), the reveal on the murder of Charles Hastings was unexpected for me, and in the end, it all wrapped up neatly.

Here's the link for the whole review:
http://www.reviewsbyjessewave.com/2011/05/02/a-portrait-of-emily/#more-48795

New release April 25th!

Alex Brady was looking for some excitement in his life, but nothing could have prepared him for what a trip to Tuscany would bring him—excitement, yes, but with an undercurrent of danger that could possibly end up costing him far more than the price of the vacation.

When Alex tells his best friend Russ of his proposed trip to Tuscany, Russ tries to dissuade him, especially when Alex explains he’ll be renting a car and making his own way around a foreign country. We're hoping this will be the first of many - and judging from the response from all of you, looks like that is a certainty!

Next, I've been busy doing my favorite thing - writing. In addition to my January releases Nowhere to Hide, Saddle Up 'N Ride and A Portrait of Phillip, I have completed the sixth and final chapter of My Vampire and I - Blood Lure to be released in March and a fun romp through Italy titled Trip of a Lifetime - release date April - both titles released by Total-e-bound.

Here's the blurb for Blood Lure:

Jared Lantos and Andrew Berés — two vampires, once lovers, now foes, struggle to find love and forgiveness while battling those who would keep them from ever trusting one another again.

While awaiting to be tried for the murder of a fellow vampire, Jared Lantos meets Joey Ryan, a young mortal, and is immediately drawn to him. Despite his conviction that the life of a loner is what he craves, Jared finds himself falling in love with Joey. The loving bond between Jared and Joey is strengthened when Jared cures Joey’s father of his dementia.

Meanwhile, Andrew discovers that the accusation of murder he’d brought against Jared was false, and seeks forgiveness from his one time lover. While in LA, Andrew chooses Tommy Cordain, a young fireman, to satisfy his need for blood, but against his better judgement, he is unable to forget the attractive young man. When the real murderer targets Andrew for the ‘final death’ by setting fire to the hotel where Andrew is staying, Tommy rescues him, and Andrew is forced to have him remember their shared night of passion.

Believing they know who the real murderer is, Jared and Andrew confront the person, but the truth when revealed, is even more terrible, and could threaten the lives of their friends and lovers.

Sounds good huh?

I'm also really happy about the re-release of A Portrait of Phillip in ebook format. This was my first published novel and has been re-edited and released by MLR Press. "Phillip' is the first in a series that follows the lives and adventures of Peter Brandon, a celebrated artist and his lover Jeff Stevens, a private investigator.
More of those to follow.

So, I haven't really been lazing around - and I'll do my best to keep this blog more up to date than in the past

Cheers, and remember, if you want to meet your favorite authors and mingle with other readers who love m/m romance - come to New Orleans in October and have a 'bon temp' !!

Yule Be Mine

See post below!

Let it snow, let it snow!

Hard to believe isn't it that next month the Yuletide will be upon us. I was lucky in that total-e-bound accepted my Christmas story - A Special Christmas - as part of their "Yule Be Mine" collection. It's due out on Dec 13th in ebook, and you have to love that cover! TEB's art department always does such a great job.

The story is pure romance - a love-lorn guy, a log cabin, a roaring fire, now all he needs is another guy to go with it all. Well, it's Christmas when wishes come true, and Santa isn't going to let our hero down. So, don't forget, this Christmas, or Hanukkah, upload A Special Christmas onto your Kindle or Nook or Sony reader or iPod - we've got 'em all covered - and enjoy!

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving too!

In praise of older women

Recently I was asked by a friend of mine if I'd mind escorting her widowed aunt to a special presentation of the local ballet company. I had met Sheila only on one prior occasion some years before, and remembered her as affable but couldn't quite remember what she looked like. Anyway, I told my friend I'd be delighted and called Sheila to ask if she'd like me to pick her up, but she said, no, she'd rather drive herself and would meet me at the theatre entrance.
When I got there I looked around, scanning the crowd for my friend's aunt Sheila. The only woman I could see standing alone and obviously waiting for someone was a rather chic looking lady fashionably dressed in black with a large red rose pinned to her lapel.
I approached her carefully. "Sheila?"
She gave me a lovely smile and held out her hand. "You must be Jim. Thanks you so much for agreeing to spend time with an old broad!"
She looked so elegant in her black brocaded coat and matching skirt, her hair beautifully coiffed, that I found myself wishing I'd dressed accordingly - not in a coat and skirt - but in something a bit smarter than my beige slacks and blue polo.
As we walked inside she took my arm and I could actually feel the eyes of many people upon us. I handed over the tickets and we went to the bar for a glass of wine. We stood chatting before the show and Sheila told me of her life in dance when she was a young girl.
"I always wanted to be a prima ballerina," she said wistfully, "but had to settle for being a Vegas showgirl."
I could tell there were many stories hiding behind her twinkling blue eyes, and I recalled that my friend had told me her aunt had been 'quite the free spirit' in her youth.
Just as we were about to mount the stairs to take our seats a young girl walked up to us and put her hand on Sheila's arm. "I just want to tell you that you are so beautiful," the girl said.
"Why, thank you," Sheila said, with a smile, and I intuited by the way she accepted the compliment that this was not an unusual occurrence for her. I imagined that Sheila had been told she was beautiful by many men and women during her life, and even now despite the tell tale lines around her eyes and mouth, she still looked stunning.
She squeezed my arm and whispered, "Not bad for seventy-four, eh?"
After the show we went for a late supper and once again I could feel the stares of the other patrons as Sheila vivaciously regaled me with hilarious tales of her life upon the 'wicked stage'.
I was quite sorry to have the evening end, but Sheila insisted she had to have her beauty sleep. I escorted her to her car, she kissed my cheek then slid onto the driver's seat with a dancer's elegance.
It was one of the most memorable evenings of my life, and something I hope to repeat often in the years to come.
As Mark Twain said, 'Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter'.
I think that is the creed by which Sheila has lived her life - and it shows

October at last

Finally, the suffocating desert heat is on the wane and we can breathe some rain-fresh air. Born to a French trapper and Shoshone woman, and educated in Boston, Red Hawk's dream to live with his people has gone terribly wrong. You might think nothing of interest has been going on in my life - and you'd be right. Kidding. How can a writer's life be uninteresting - at least to one's self?
I've been busy of course, writing and narrating audio books, line proofing and doing some reviews for Rainbow Reviews. So time does not hang heavily in the Bowie household, no siree. New releases in the last couple of months have been RED, an Anthology published by MLR Press, Slaves to Love 2 released through 1Romance ebooks and A Deadly Game, also published by MLR Press.
Total-e-bound has accepted two stories from me, With A Little Help From My Friends, about a guy whose friends just hate seeing him single, and Blood Relations, my latest vampire tale. My novel Time after Time (see below) is a finalist for a Lammie Award - LAMBDA's annual literary award for gay fiction. I don't usually write posts like this one, but recently I've felt the need to rant just a little. Last year -- 2009 -- sucked . Not professionally, you understand -- I did okay with writing and book sales etc. -- but I lost two very dear friends and it's been hard to reconcile their loss. We went back a long way together - Jimmy, Gee (short for Godfrey) and I worked together in show biz years ago.
Though time and distance kept us apart most of the time, we never lost touch, and when my partner Phil and I visited them in London they always made us feel so welcome and at home. Gee passed away after a long bout with cancer, and sad to say Jimmy never really recover from the loss. He visited us at our home in Nevada last April, but he was a shadow of his former self -- totally at sea without his safe haven.
Last December I received the sad news that Jimmy had died after falling down a flight of stairs at his home in Mitcham, Surrey. Phil and I attended his memorial service in London on Jan. 30th, his birthday. His and Gee's ashes were scattered together from a boat on the River Thames. I was glad I was there to say goodbye to both of them, but the crushing sadness I felt that day has taken a long time to dissipate. It's still there, and somehow I feel it always will be. Friends -- good friends -- are rare, and impossible to replace. The memories I have of them, the good times, the laughs we shared, will never die -- I will always hold them close to myheart. I just wish I could hold my dear friends there again too.

New releases

Today is a good day! Anyhoo, back it is I am, and still reeling from my visit to the Big Apple - first time in so many years I was just knocked out at how great the city looked. Saw 2 great musicals -South Pacific and Finian's Rainbow. The casts in both these shows were outstanding but for sheer eye candy you can't beat Cheyenne Jackson - what a hunk - and the guy can sing!

Really wanted to see Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman in A Steady Rain, but as you can imagine, with those two boys in it, the show was a sell out before it opened. Darn!

Writing news is I have a new Nick Fallon Investigation coming soon - Murder Above Fourth is the third book in the series, and once again Nick proves more than a match for the evil that men do. He's on shaky ground with Eric, his lover, a couple of times, but that man just oozes charm - just as well, 'cause Eric is really mad this time!

Bound in Blood, the latest book in the Vampire and I series will be released Dec. 24th - the perfect Christmas stocking filler!

Also coming up a sequel to Ride 'Em Cowboy - release date February 2010. For eighteen years Bernard has lived a life of degradation in a monastery – abused and humiliated by those who should have sheltered and cared for him. When Marcus offers Bernard the chance of freedom he willingly accepts it, leaving the monastery without regret or a backward glance.

A victim of a plague that sweeps Europe in the 15th century, Bernard has only one chance of survival – and once more he accepts what only Marcus can offer – immortality. Time and distance eventually separate Marcus and Bernard as they make their way through the centuries. Bernard finds happiness in the arms of Pietro Dante, an academician employed in the Vatican library. All is well until the day when a demon force is unleashed upon the world in the guise of a new Pope.

Only Bernard and Pietro know of the demon's plans, and they find a strange ally in Constantine, the demon's son, who wishes to protect his mortal lover, Gustav. But the demon Pope is willing to sacrifice everything, including his son, for his ambitions. Even the threat of opposition from the Vampire Council headed by Marcus and his friend Joseph Meyer will not halt him in his plan to rule the world – and destroy all vampires in the process.

Can Bernard and his friends overcome the demonic plans to bring about the 'end of times', or will the forces of evil triumph over love and loyalty?

Theresa has done a wonderful trailer for the "My Vampire and I" series - just click on the cover to see what I mean. Hank is immensely rich and likes to play games - games that generally involve Reese's ability to seduce just about anyone, then have the seduction video taped for Hank's voyeuristic enjoyment. The story is written along the lines of Dangerous Liaisons - two cold-hearted, spoiled jerks out to ruin the life of an innocent. The innocent in question is Jeff Hartman, the office geek, who is already in awe of Reese, and whom Reese thinks will be an easy conquest - and lay.

Jeff, however, is not stupid, and at first is not completely taken in by Reese's flattery, invitations to dinner and affectionate moves. Gradually, of course, he succumbs, not so much to Reese's good looks and charm, but to what he begins to see underneath the glamorous facade - a hurt and troubled man who gave up on love a long time ago.

When Reese finds himself falling in love with Jeff, and admits as much to Hank, his one time friend becomes his nemesis, bound and determined to destroy any chance Reese and Jeff may have for happiness. Pitting one man against the other by revealing the video tape to Jeff, Hank exults, convinced that now Reese will be his playmate again, and forget about love and similar nonsense.

The story has been told before in various forms, so it is a measure of Ms. Thompson's skill as a writer that one remains totally wrapped up in the plot as it unwinds to its inevitable conclusion. Highly recommended.

MLR Press has released Sometimes Life's a Drag as a single title ebook. Very quickly, Micah finds himself falling in love with Joseph and, through him, is drawn into a world of elegant and fascinating people.
When Joseph disappears on a supposed business trip, Micah is frustrated by the man's close friends who seem unwilling to give him any information or allow him to help in the search. This just in from Marame at Rainbow Reviews:

This romantic thriller by J.P. Bowie's is a haunting page-turner. "Time After Time" is a cross between "Colombo" and "Howard's End," and has some great, classic elements: a romantic mystery involving star-crossed lovers and a beautiful estate with an ancient history. I was hooked into the story from page one and couldn't put it down. From the very beginning, you are as much in the dark as the main character, Michael Ballantyne. You experience the same excitement of discovery when he learns of his inheritance, when he sees the majestic Bedford Park for the first time, and when he meets the enigmatic Jonathan Robertson.
Read the entire review at Rainbow-Reviews.com

Success!

Well, after a few setbacks, and some grim words from tight lips, I finally managed to get the banner at the bottom of the page to link directly to my website - hooray! The well-written intricate plot builds from the beginning to the breathtaking conclusion. I was held spellbound as each layer of the intriguing puzzle unfolds. Michael and Jonathan are realistic characters with natural curiosity and loveable personalities, the secondary characters along with the tidbits of history and a little humor added just enough backdrops for attention-grabbing visualization. However, he soon discovers that out on the vast regions of the Atlantic, sudden squalls, both natural and man-made, happen all too frequently – and some people are definitely not the great guys they appear to be.

For those of you who may not know who the heck I am, my monicker is J.P. Bowie and I write gay erotic fiction, commonly known as m/m. You may sometimes see those initials on a man's shirt or sweater label, but then it means medium, not man on man, uh...sex.

Last weekend I spent time in Kansas City with Carol Lynne - don't think I need introduce her - she's a famous writer of m/m fiction! She was hosting an author/reader get together, and I must say, it was a blast. it was so great to get to meet people who previously had just been email addresses, and the occasional tiny photo. Carol did a great job, keeping us fed and entertained. We even went to see a movie where we sat in recliners, and were waited on by some very friendly and perky waiters while we watched The Proposal. The movie was okay, the food great and the service impeccable. I never want to see another movie without this kind of pampering!

In case you're interested I have quite the list of books published by total-e-bound - a publishing company based in the UK, and by MLR Press under the auspices of Laura Baumbach, herself a great writer of m/m fiction. You can see all my books listed at my website www.jpbowie.com.
